Adeola Balogun was born on 17th November, 1966 to Akanke and Bakare Balogun. He is married to Adeyinka Balogun. He is blessed with three children, namely: Fuad Balogun, 9 years old, Haliyah Balogun, 5 years old, and Rodiyah Balogun, who is about a year old.
Adeola Balogun is currently a lecturer in Fine Art Department, Yaba College of Technology, the cradle of higher institution of learning in Nigeria, and the foremost art institution in Nigeria.
Adeola Balogun started his education aspiration from Local Primary School Ikeja, in Lagos State, and completed his elementary education at Saint James’ Primary school, Ota, in Ogun State. He proceeded to Anglican Grammar School, Ota, for his post primary school. He was admitted into Yaba College of Technology in 1988, to study General Art, against the wish of his folks. After his Ordinary National Diploma, he did his one year industrial attachment, partly with Asociated Media, an advertising agency in Lagos and partly with Riverside Studio, an art and design studio, run by Olu Amoda, a renowned sculptor.
He returned to Yaba College of Technology for his Higher National Diploma, and graduated as the best student in sculpture, he also won the award for the Best Life Drawing Student, 1993/94 set. With special request by the Fine Art Department, he was posted back to the Fine Department for his National Youth Service programme between 1994/95. He lectured student students in courses such as Life and General Drawing, Introduction to Sculpture and Construction. After his Youth Service, he was immediately re-absorbed as a member of staff in his alma-mater.
Believing strongly in the philosophy of ‘Practice what you teach,’ Adeola Balogun established Artivity home studio, where he retires after his official working our in the department, to satisfy his creative yearnings. He also receives students from his institution and other art schools for industrial attachment. Thus, his studio is always a bee-hive of creative activities. With this, he has been able to successfully harmonize studio practice and academic duties, which are in most cases difficult to combine.
Adeola Balogun enrolled at Akoka College of Education (Technical), for Teacher Training Certificate programme in 1998. He thereafter, proceeded to University of Benin in 2001, to embark on his master degree programme which was prolonged by the 6 month nation wide strike action, carried out by university lecturers in 2003.
He returned to Yaba College of Technology in 2004, after completing his master degree programme. Apart from his official duties in the institution, he also holds the curatorial portfolio for the School of Art, Design and Printing gallery. As the curator, he has been able to successfully package several exhibitions for staff and non-staff of the institution. Among these shows are: “The Way We Are”, by a group of artists known as Danfo Project, in 2005. “Seed Phenomenon” was a solo exhibition by his humble self in 2006, this was followed by “Unframed, Untamed”, a solo exhibition by Raqib Bashorun, in 2007. “Memories” was by renowned painter, Kolade Oshinowo, in 2008, all in SADP gallery.
Adeola Balogun has staged three solo exhibitions, participated in several group shows and a great number of commissioned projects within Nigeria and beyond. His solo shows are: ‘Visual Symphony’ at Lekki Restaurant Gallery, Chevron Nigeria Limited, in 1998, ‘Egungun Masquerade; a Source of Inspiration For Modern Sculpture: M.F.A. Thesis exhibition at University of Benin, in 2004. ‘Seed Phenomenon’ was another solo show in 2006, in SADP gallery, Yaba College of Technology. His public commissioned works include the Obafemi Awolowo, 10feet statue, at Allen round-about, Ikeja, Funso Williams’, 12.6feet bronze statue, at Western Avenue round-about, now named after Funso Williams, and Sir John Glover and Madam Tinubu’s bronze busts, at the foyer of Union Bank building in Marina, Lagos, Nigeria.
The largest collection of Adeola Balogun’s works in a private gallery can be found with OYASAF, a private art foundation, established by Prince Yemisi Shyllon. In OYASAF collections are over thirty life-size and heroic size bronze sculptures, executed by him. In addition, OYASAF has in its collection, over 20, life-size glass fibre works executed by Mr. Balogun . He also has an innumerable number of his works in various media and presentation that belong to OYASAF.
